Education Committee Meeting: January 25

Just a reminder about the Churchill Alternative Education Committee meeting next Tuesday night (January 25). As usual, it will be held in the staff room. All are welcome and are encouraged to come.

We've been asked to add a high priority item to the agenda: a discussion about graded report cards. In addition to this item, the other possible agenda items are listed below.  We will definitely be discussing the report card question, other items will be discussed based on the interests of those who attend and on how much time remains.

Proposed agenda items (actual agenda to be determined):

1. Graded Report Cards
OCDSB staff has insisted that grades appear on report cards this term. This is a new practice for Churchill - for some students and families this will be their first exposure to graded reports.
Questions for the Education Committee on this are:
a) As a school community, how do we deal with this policy in the context of the alternative program, which values non-competition, intrinsic-motivation, authentic assessment, and a focus on child-directed learning?
b) Should we pursue having the board change its position on how grades are reported and/or distributed? If so, what action should be taken by CASC and recommended to Churchill families?

2. Alternative Program Renewal

Safe Schools and Bullying

Here are some resources about bullying and keeping schools safe.

People for Education included a link to their fact sheet on the Safe Schools Act in their latest newsletter. Here is a link to the fact sheet: http://peopleforeducation.com/English/safeschoolsact

The Ministry of Education also has a number of resources about bullying, which can be found here: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/publications.html. This includes "Bullying: we can all stop it (a guide for parents)" a pdf file found here.

Questions from Parents: Cursive Writing and Core French

The Education Committee is one of several forums for asking questions and discussing issues relating to curriculum, learning strategies, and other educational topics. Recently we had two questions that Megan has been helpful in finding us answers for.

1. Questions about cursive writing

A number of parents have asked questions about cursive writing. Questions are essentially about whether or not it is taught, how is it taught, and whether or not there any school/board/ministry - wide approach to cursive writing instruction? For families who want to encourage this skill, are there recommendations on how to supplement what is done at school?

Megan responded to this question:

Cursive writing is a very small portion of the language curriculum.  It is taught in most grade 3 classrooms throughout the year.  Natalie, for example, gives these writing exercises as homework.  Russell does Callarobics - a cursive writing, small motor exercise twice week.  There are writing books that you can get for Scholars Choice that have great exercises in them.

Education Committee members also shared some links on cursive writing instruction here.

We are looking for input on what workshops or information sessions should be held. Your participation in this short survey will help us organize information sessions of interest in ways that allow more people to attend.

The ten-question survey is available online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3R7K382

Please complete the survey before Friday January 15th
