About Churchill Alternative
Churchill Alternative School, which opened in September, 1984, is a publicly funded Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) school accommodating students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. The boundary for the school is defined by the centreline of Sherbourne Avenue, Carling Avenue, the CPR tracks (near Preston Street), and the Ottawa River.
As a public school, Churchill Alternative School (Churchill) operates in accordance with Ministry of Education and Training requirements. It also follows OCDSB policies with respect to class size and staff hiring. As an alternative school, Churchill features self-directed learning in multi-age classrooms, goal setting, collaborative assessment, and expanded arts programs, all supported by parents and teachers who work in partnership.
This guide, developed by the Churchill community, gives parents and teachers an outline of our philosophy, a sense of the learning atmosphere that we strive to create, and practical information about the day-to-day operation of our school.
