Curriculum

As stated in Ministry of Education and Training (Ministry) documents, students in Ontario schools require consistent, challenging programs that will capture their interest and prepare them for a lifetime of learning. They require knowledge and skills that will help them compete in a global economy and allow them to lead lives of integrity and satisfaction, both as citizens and individuals.

The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8, 1997 has been developed to meet these goals by providing rigorous and challenging curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade 8. The documents outline the required knowledge and skills for each grade, set high standards, and identify what parents and the public can expect children to learn in Ontario schools. (These curriculum documents replace The Common Curriculum: Policies and Outcomes, Grade 1-9, 1995.)

At Churchill, teachers develop and deliver the curriculum within the following context:

  • Ministry documents for each subject area;
  • OCDSB curriculum guidelines;
  • OCDSB support documents:
    • Planning for Excellence in Curriculum and Program,
    • Building Towards Excellence, and
    • Measuring Excellence;
  • OCDSB curriculum services and resources;
  • research and theory;
  • interests of students and staff;
  • input from parents and volunteers; and
  • current events.
