Daily Routines

School Yard

The school yard is supervised by Churchill staff from 7:45 to 8:00 and from 11:20 to 12:00. School buses are met by staff. Kindergarten staff are on duty to meet Kindergarten children in their yard. The Primary/Junior yard is supervised from 2:25 to 2:35 for dismissal only (not playtime) to ensure that all children have been picked up or are on their way home.

Children riding bicycles to school must walk them on the sidewalk, through the upper yard, and lock them to the bicycle racks. Students may not enter the staff parking lot on their way to or from the bicycle racks. Children wearing roller blades are expected to remove them at the planter box. Skate boards and folded scooters must be carried safely at all times.

Students must wear clothing appropriate to the weather. Rules for enjoyable and safe play in the yard will be discussed with the children at the beginning of each season and posted.

Recess

Recess arrangements are flexible. Teachers decide whether and/or when recess will occur, based on the needs of their individual programs. A scheduled morning recess time is available. In the afternoon, teachers decide when to take their classes outside and, as a result, are responsible for their own recess supervision. For specific playground guidelines, see the “Staff Handbook” and Policies and Procedures.

Lunch

Students eat their lunches in their classrooms. Lunch recess is from 10:55 to 11:35, and lunch recess is from 11:35 to 11:55 for all classes. Primary classes have two junior students to help them. There is also a staff member on duty going from room to room on each floor making sure things run smoothly and safely during eating time.

We have some classrooms that have a student who is allergic to nut products. These classrooms must remain free of nut products at all times.

Milk Program

The Milk Program provides cold, fresh 2% milk or chocolate milk to students at lunch. The milk, procured twice weekly from Cochrane's Dairy, is stored in a refrigerator at the school. The milk is priced slightly above cost, but there is a special family price. Any profits go to CASC. We will collect twice per year, in September and January. Subsidized milk can be arranged through the office; inquiries are welcome.
