Strategic Planning and Committee Budget Presentation
 
Active and Safe Routes - $1000.00
 
Asking for $1000.00 with the possibility for a $500.00 honorarium which would bring that down to
$500.00.
This would cover the events that we do during the school year – international walk to school
week, winter walk to school day.
Bike Rodeo and helmet check – this would be a great thing to do for the kids.
No stickers, or photocopying costs for this year.
 
Action
Tim to get in touch with Owen Hislop to involve him in the biking day.
Tim to talk to Wallace about the problems with the parking on Edison.
Megan to draft a message to parents about taking care along Edison when parking and walking
to the school.
 
Discussion
We need to have a letter to parents about etiquette on the street so that kids are waling on the
street.
There are two different departments that deal with the parking & driving issues around our school.
Is it possible that we need to let new parents know about the parking turning etc…
We are very limited as to what we can to do calm the traffic as it is city property.
 
Arts Committee - $3500.00
 
We have many events planned for this year – we have most of our last years budget planned for
Art show is planned for after the electives.
Knitting Club - $50.00
Drama Club - $150.00
Chalk Festival – $50.00
School Talent Show – this is planned for this year.
Water Color Winter Garden – this would be possible placed onto a canvas and used elsewhere.
Painted frame planned for outside Megan’s office.
Ukrainian Eggs – this is typically every second year. Last year the kids brought in $2.00 to cover
the cost. It will cost us $550 if they do not.
Catherine Greer – storytelling workshop deal that is $185 – the grade 6’s would take this class
with the possibility of the 6’s sharing this with the rest of the school.
Junkyard Symphony and Science of Sound - $565.00 – could this become part of the electives,
this is more than just a performance.
 
Wall Murals – we are still working on these and we have three teachers that are ready to start
working on these now.
Paper on the wall – can we paint a frame up so that people would know where they can put
things up.
National Art Gallery Circle of Canada – this is a free opportunity and the teachers are working on
setting this up.
Suzuki Performing Concert - this is a free concert that we could take advantage of.
 
Fundraising Opportunities for Arts Committee
Put on courses for parents to teach different skills – animation, desktop publishing, felting
Cloth bags for the Christmas craft fair – we could sell these to fundraise as well.
Tiggy Winkles wants to have their shopping night.
Gallery Nights are also an opportunity that we could look at – wall space
Rag and Bones – is this something that we might think of also including?
 
Discussion
We also need to be mindful of teaching timelines and adhering to our curriculum guidelines in the
class.
 
Education Committee - $1000.00 (with $1000.00 grant coming in)
 
We spent money last year on our information nights – this year we have grant money to apply to
the programs that we would like to do so we are not asking for money this year.
 
Back to Nature - $2000.00 with $500.00 from CASC (possible grant monies)
 
This is over 10 years old now and it needs a lot of work – we need to replace the terraces.
We have 3 kids from Nepean that have come for volunteer hours
Heather Gillman is working with Eloise to get kids more involved
We need some better seating, stumps and a bench building program with the parents and
students.
Ray wants to have the kids down in the back to nature and have a teaching tool that he could
used to teach to the kids. Would a re purposed black board work? Can we find something in our
storage shed?
Natalie says that the kids are working on making this a better place for them to work in.
It would be great to have additional plants for the back to nature

Discussion
It would be nice to have a “grand opening” with the school. Art gallery concept in the back to
nature. – Natalie Shorkey to take the lead with Eloise
There is a new family that is a geologist who is interested to featuring some items in the back to
nature.
Do we need to worry about our Ash trees? Dan to talk to Eloise about who to contact.
We need to have a bit of documentation about the back to nature for the website – Eloise to send
this to Britt.
 
Principals Report – $8500.00
 
School yard – the sand and deck is being looked at by the board. Sink holes and other items
are flagged. Lines need to be painted onto the steps. Heath Department will provide paint for the
foursquare & other paint.
Ukuleles - The school has purchased 15 Ukuleles - $22.00 deal secured – Owen is running this
club and we would like to have another 15 ukuleles, can we split the bill on this?
The might Uke opportunity to fundraise at the school.
Yoga Mats – there will be a program at the school – we need 25 more mats. $300.00
 
Action - Susan and Megan to draft a letter to Lulu Lemon
 
Scientist in the School – all grades involved with a price tag of $3224.00 – some of this is paid
for, we would like to split the costs $1000.00 from CASC
Math & Science Electives – we think that this might cost us $700.00 for science and $500.00 for
math as we have a lot of the supplies.
School of Rock – Ray needs front money for this year. We would like to charge admission for
this and look it more as a fundraiser. Can we sell more t-shirts or program at the door.
The Nook & EA’s – CASC gives a lump sum to the teachers but we never give this to the EA’s
and Megan would like to motion that we give our EA’s a sum of money from CASC. There are
3 EA’s that we could give $100.00 each and and additional $100.00 for The Nook. The Nook is
used by 60 kids at Churchill. This will be revisited on a yearly basis.

Are we comfortable giving the EA’s the money or should we allocate the money to the
Nook?

The Yearbook – We would like to have a more student driven yearbook with more options for
writing from kindergarten to grade 6. We want to be able to make this more accessible to more
families this year so are asking for an offset cost of $1000.00
Lynn raised $1000.00 last year and we charge $20.00 per book.
21st staff PD Day meeting
School Improvement Plan has changed – thought need was to focus on communication/writing
but Churchill is strong on this so new focus will be on math for School Improvement – will be
writing a rough draft on PD Day
The possibility of having a parent Math night where parents could learn about different problem
solving models. It would be nice to use the parents for these math electives.
Hallways & Stairs – there is a real safety concern to make sure that the kids are safe. The kids
know the standard process for after their snack as they head outside for recess.
Cheryl Brouse – we will be losing her as the afternoon lunch monitor but she will be staying on in
the morning. We are looking for a replacement who would monitor the kids and then go outside
for recess. It is from 12-1pm and can be anyone.
Morning Run – this has been very successful, we have classes that would like to do this all year.
We need more parents down the side of Churchill or are interested in going on the run
Composting – we have a waste management audit at the school so we need to think about how
we are going to reduce our waste.
Cookbook- this is well underway and we had lots of submissions so thank you. Steve Zelle is
doing the graphic design on this.
New Hire - Alison Rowe - she is supporting Tiu and Shauna’s classes right now and is
permanent.
Entertainment Books – these will be going out this week. You can order these for relatives at
other locations.
WHMIS – there are spot checks being done on schools we have increased the health and safety
skills in the school. This is not for volunteers but board employees.
Board Website – this needs to be updated and Lynn Koch is going to work on it to get it up to
date by the end of October. Portrait gallery will be on the site
Parent Conferences – this will be a time for parents to come in and meet with teachers.
November 18th – parent teacher conference opportunity (progress reports go our after that)
 
Teachers Report
 
Busy September! School of Rock has started and they are working on Remembrance day
program. Ukulele program to introduce the kids to the instruments and we will have a Ukulele
club. Ministry prep time – last year we had a teacher come in and this year Andrew and Natalie
will be doing this and looking at art opportunities with a focus on classical music and African
drumming and singing with movement and drama. These will be offered to all the students.
 
Snowshoes – $400.00 – Paula to coordinate the possible rental of the snowshoes.
 
Discussions – Could we do a type of silent auction selling services or skills. This could be an
online silent auction where you could bid on services. Megan to send out a survey monkey to
see what parents could offer.
Should we look for a new lecture speaker that we could leverage for a speaking engagement?
Anna is interested in leading this in the coming year. The VP’s are having a big conference in the
spring and there would be a possible speaker to piggyback on with our school. Megan to ask who
is coming to see if we can use them.
